Melinda is an outcast and doesn't have any friends, how does she in a way prevent herself from having friends?

Melinda says she has two sides to her one that wants to go and have fun and the other who thinks the world is dangerous and thinks you need to be cautious. How can you relate to this?

In this book Melinda went from being in middle school and having a great group of friends to being in high school and having that group of friends kind of break up and not like her. Does this happen often in society? Why/why not?
